Mushrooms!

Mushrooms are the object of much scrutiny and interest. Whether you are drawn to them because they match your aesthetic, or hunt them because they’re yummy, or consume them for…um…other reasons, there’s plenty to love about mushrooms! There’s plenty to be concerned about as well – we all know that certain mushrooms will straight up kill you, so it’s wise to be very sure when you’re harvesting your own for food.

Homeopaths love mushrooms, too – and we especially love the poisonous ones! Because homeopathic remedies are so diluted, some of our best and most useful remedies are extremely toxic in their gross (undiluted) form. If that seems strange or illogical to you, I urge you to take my class! One of our favorite mushrooms for homeopathic use is Fly Agaric (Agaricus muscarius) and you can see why when you look at all the symptoms and pathologies it has been shown to help resolve. Isn’t nature incredible? Even natural toxins can be agents of healing when used in the right ways.

Homeopathy for Pepito

One of the things people are understandably skeptical about with homeopathy is the high dilution of the original substance in our medicines. Thank goodness pets and farm animals don’t care about that – they just know that the remedies work! Pepito goes from gurgly, upset tummy to quietly sleeping within minutes of a dose of his favorite remedy, Lycopodium.

Homeopathic Lycopodium clavatum is prepared from a moss that some researchers believe may be the oldest plant on earth. It can be incredibly effective in resolving uncomfortable gastric issues like bloating, gas, indigestion, and pain. It’s also amazing in controlling edema and can even be used to help certain people feel more confident and less anxious! As with most homeopathic remedies, it is NOT a good idea to take Lycopodium in its gross form, since it’s toxic that way – our system of dilution and succussion make our remedies gentle and safe.

Chapped & Cracked

My mom used to suffer greatly in the winter with dry, cracked skin on the ends of her fingers. Some of the cracks were deep enough to bleed, and she tried all sorts of lotions to ease the pain. I am sure that homeopathic Petroleum would have helped her immensely, and I wish I had known about it back then.

I’m thankful that my recommendation of Petroleum 200c has helped a few friends with cracked skin, chapped lips, and itchy eczema that’s worse in the cold weather. I used to slather Vaseline on my lips every night in the winter to avoid painful chapped lips, but I no longer do that – a dose of Petroleum 200c once or twice a week in the winter (or when I’m out in a cold wind) is enough to keep me in good shape! And the best part is that homeopathy works with my body, not on it, so I don’t have to worry about added toxic ingredients or the possibility of bacterial transfer from lip products. Hooray!

Acidic? Grab the Nat Phos!

A few years ago, my daughters and I started going to the gym. We loved the challenge of working out, but we didn’t much care for the aches and pains of sore muscles as we acclimated to our workouts. Fortunately for us, I knew about Nat phos! A dose of Nat phos 6x after a good workout and another before bed that same day was usually enough to avoid more than a faint reminder that we had pushed our limits. Nat phos stimulates the body’s ability to balance acidity, including lactic acid, the culprit of sore muscles.

Nat phos is also a great remedy for folks who suffer from acid reflux, heartburn, and even garden variety indigestion. Rather than suppressing the sensation of acidity, Nat phos encourages the body to regulate itself, avoiding the flareup of too much acid in the stomach, esophagus, intestines, or muscles.

Grief and Homeopathy

I remember when I had to be on antidepressants for post partum depression, I hated the fact that I couldn’t feel things as deeply as I usually could. I understood that was kind of the point, but I knew very quickly that I had to find a way forward that didn’t involve putting a damper on my ability to feel and express a full range of emotions. How I wish I had known about homeopathy back then!

One of our most beautiful homeopathic remedies for grief is Ignatia amara, made from the St. Ignatius Bean. Rather than suppressing emotion, homeopathic Ignatia works with the body to allow it to regulate itself – to feel all the feels without becoming overwhelmed by them. When my mother’s life was ending last year, Ignatia was a calm and steady companion for my daughters and me. When the pressure and worry of her care and ultimately the fact of her death threatened to bury us in grief, a single dose of Ignatia could lift the fog and help us to feel and see clearly what we know to be true: that this, too, would pass and that God was with us through it all.

Barometric Woes

We’re a lot more affected by weather than we’re willing to admit. Older folks complain of stiff and painful joints when its cold or rainy. Not many of us are big fans of the oppressive summer heat here in the southeast USA. Perhaps one of the harshest ways the weather hits us is the headaches caused by barometric shifts. For the many who are sensitive to that, those headaches are unavoidable, uncontrollable, inconvenient at best and intolerable at worst. Unless you know about homeopathic Kali bichromium!

Practical homeopaths use Kali bichromium 30c, which is prepared from bichromate of potash. Yes, the same potash used in tye-dyeing. In its gross form it’s definitely not something we would recommend ingesting, but in homeopathic form it’s diluted and prepared in a way that is safe and incredibly effective at stimulating the body’s ability to maintain a healthy balance in spite of barometric changes. If you suffer headaches or sinus pain when the weather changes, maybe Kali bi will help you rise above!

The Dreaded “Stomach Bug”

I’m armed and ready to defend my household against Norovirus, and you can be, too! Arsenicum album, Nux vomica, Ipecacuanha, and Veratrum album are my favorite homeopathic remedies for “the stomach bug.” These remedies are all single-source natural substances, prepared in a very precise manner in a homeopathic pharmacy like OHM or Boiron, and each has its own medicinal personality. For example, when someone is suffering from what feels like (or actually is) food poisoning, making them weak, ill, and restless, I grab the Arsenicum. If they’re weak and can hardly exit the bathroom, Veratrum album is my go-to. If they’re the kind of person that can’t stop throwing up once they start, my first thought is Ipecacuanha. If their illness is the result of being overtired, overworked, or having overeaten, it’s a call for Nux vomica.

Usually after a dose or two of the right remedy in relatively quick succession they’re feeling much better and we can move to the stage of ginger ale and saltines, with another dose if or when they start feeling nauseated again.

Isn’t that better than just suffering through it? Better than dragging them out to a care center, assuring that others are exposed to their illness (and they’re exposed to others’ illnesses), and paying for medical fees as well as prescription meds that may come laden with side effects that last long after the illness has passed? Of course this is just my opinion, but my family and I much prefer to heal ourselves naturally and in our own homes.
